Chhangchhangdi (छाङ्गछाङ्ग्दि)

Introduction

Chhangchhangdi (छाङ्गछाङ्ग्दि), also known as Chaya-kshetra, is located in the Syangja District of Gandaki Province in central Nepal. It is famous for the Chhangchhangdi Shiva Temple (Chaya-kshetra), a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site mentioned in the Swasthani scripture. The site features a natural cave and a continuous waterfall flowing over the rocks. The place derives its name from the Magar language, combining "changchang" (the sound of flowing water) and "di" (water)

Puranic History

According to local religious tradition, after Satyawati's death, Lord Shiva carried her lifeless body until it gradually disintegrated and its remains fell to the earth. It is believed that Satyawati's buttock fell at the sacred site of Guhyeshwari, while the final part of her body fell at Chhangchhangdi.

According to the legend, Lord Shiva became exhausted and thirsty while carrying her body. He struck a nearby hill with his arrow, causing water to spring forth from the rock. A waterfall believed to have originated from this divine act can still be seen today in Ward No. 3 of Chhangchhangdi.

The temple holds great religious significance for Hindus. Every year, devotees from various places visit the site on different religious occasions, particularly on Maha Shivaratri and Thulo Ekadashi, to worship Lord Shiva and pay their respects at this sacred place.

Chhangchhangdi: A Place of Religious and Cultural Significance

Chhangchhangdi is a place of considerable religious and tourism significance. Its people are engaged in a wide range of occupations, including overseas employment in Arab countries, farming, business, and various professions. Many residents also serve as doctors, engineers, and members of the armed forces in Nepal, India, and the United Kingdom, while others pursue their education. Chhangchhangdi is a fine example of cultural diversity, where people from different communities, including Brahmins, Kshetriyas, Magars, Newars, Dalits, and others, live together in harmony.

The rapid development of Chhangchhangdi began after the restoration of democracy in Nepal in 2046 B.S. (1989 A.D.). Nevertheless, the area still has considerable potential for further development. Every ward has access to roads, communication services, and electricity. The area also has healthcare facilities, schools, local youth clubs, *Aama Samuhas* (mothers' groups), and other community organizations.

The former Village Development Committee (VDC) office is located in Dhavung-Thati. The Adhikhola River forms the boundary between Chhangchhangdi and Swarek VDC. Dahathum VDC lies to the northeast, while Waling Municipality extends across the western and southwestern areas. The Siddhartha Highway passes through Chhangchhangdi, providing an important transportation link. The area has been connected to the highway for more than four decades.
