Background
Kushesvar Mahadev Temple is located in Dumja, Sindhuli District, Nepal. The Adilinga present in the Kushesvar Mahadev Temple is the first-ever linga on Earth, which is why it is called Adilinga, with "Adi" meaning "the first." It is one and first of the major sixty-four lingas in Nepal. The temple is situated in proximity to the banks of the Sunkoshi River, nearby the confluence of the Sunkoshi and Lilawati (currently known as the Indrawati) rivers. The surrounding regions, including the Kushesvar Temple, are collectively known as Durgatirtha.
Penance by Different People at Different Times in This Pilgrimage
Penance by Devas and Asuras
In the early days of the first Satyayuga (सत्ययुग), both Devas and Asuras performed penance here with the goal of gaining victory in their battle against each other. Although the Devas emerged victorious and ruled in Amaravati, the Asuras who died in the war attained a supreme abode through the grace of Devi Durga.
Penance by Bhrasta (भ्रष्ट)
A very sinful Brahmin named Bhrasta happened to reach Durgatirtha one night. Intending to steal the linga, he touched it and attempted to lift it. The holy ash from the linga touched his forehead. He also ate the fruits offered in the temple and drank water from the river. On that cold night by the riverbank, he died. The messenger of Lord Shiva arrived and took him to Shiva Loka, where he continued to live as one of Lord Shiva's devotees.
Penance by Birupakshya (विरूपाक्ष)
A sinful Brahmin named Birupakshya, who was suffering from a skin disease and wandering aimlessly, reached the patronage of Sage Ne (Ne Muni). Following the advice of Sage Ne, he bathed in the holy Koshi River, worshiped the Adilinga, and performed great penance. As a result, his skin ailments were relieved.
