The Legacy of Sage Gheranda

A long time ago, during the early Vedic period, there lived a great sage named Gheranda. Renowned as a master of yoga, he authored several significant yoga sutras and contributed profoundly to the yogic tradition. These teachings were compiled into a text known as the Gheranda Samhita.

Sage Gheranda meditated in a serene forest nestled in the hills. There, he imparted his profound knowledge to his disciple, Chanda. The local people considered themselves blessed to have such a revered sage in their midst.

Over time, the region where the sage resided came to be known by his name, Rishi Gheranda. Eventually, this area evolved into a kingdom called the Kingdom of Rishi Gheranda. Due to variations in local dialects, the kingdom's name gradually changed and became known as the Kingdom of Rishing Gherang.

In a later period, when the kingdom was divided between two sons of the ruling king, one retained the name Rishing, while the other adopted the name Gherang.

Over time, Gherang's pronunciation and spelling shifted, eventually becoming known as Ghiring. In the later historical period, the Kingdom of Tanahun annexed Ghiring. Subsequently, the Kingdom of Gorkha unified all the smaller kingdoms, forming a single nation known as the Kingdom of Nepal.
