Pandavkhani - a historically significant village in Galkot Municipality
Pandavkhani is a village located in Galkot Municipality, within the Baglung District of Nepal's Gandaki Province. Known for its scenic beauty and natural landscapes, Pandavkhani offers visitors and residents a tranquil environment, surrounded by hills, forests, and rural farmland. Pandavkhani, a historically significant village holds deep connections to the Mahabharata and the legendary Pandava brothers. According to local tradition, this area served as a refuge for the Pandavas and their mother Kunti during their 12-year exile, imposed after their defeat in a game of dice against the Kauravas. The village's name, Pandavkhani, is derived from these Pandava brothers, emphasizing its symbolic importance.
One of the village’s most remarkable features is the Panchadhara, a structure consisting of five ancient water spouts sculpted from a single stone slab, located at Gyathar. These spouts are believed to have been constructed by the Pandavas themselves, symbolizing their presence in the region. The site is further enriched by the Kunti Temple, dedicated to their mother, and the Regishwoare Temple, both of which add spiritual and archaeological value to the area.
The Panchadhara, however, has suffered from neglect over time. Overgrown with moss, lichen, and weeds, the water no longer flows through the spouts, and access to the site has deteriorated. Today, both the Panchadhara and the temples stand in a dilapidated state, requiring urgent conservation efforts. This ancient heritage site, nestled by the Mangkhola River, reflects the cultural and historical legacy of the Pandavas but now faces the threat of being lost to time without proper restoration.
